BALI Mentors
We have recruited a diverse group of professionals from the business, law,
academia, political, corporate, not-for-profit and public service sectors,
to serve as mentors and sponsors for our trainees. Mentors address our
trainees during the course of our two-week intensive high school debate
training program and in our other programs as well. Our mentors offer their
professional expertise and discuss their experiences and insights on
particular career opportunities, and suggest career paths to trainees.
BALI mentors also serve as volunteer judges for our City-wide high school
debate competition where they specifically evaluate the performance of the
debate teams recruited from high schools throughout New York City. The
judges carefully evaluate the team’s performances with respect to
presentation and substance. Our volunteer judges, who are often lawyers
themselves, select the winning debate team.
We work hard to make available a diverse group of committed professionals to
serve as mentors and judges, reflecting the diverse races, ethnicities, and
religious backgrounds of our BALI trainees. We look for women and men with a
specific interest in inspiring young women in high school and college. We
encourage them to guide trainees to seek the best and highest opportunities
and to help trainees determine and pursue careers of their choice. Where a
mentor perceives a trainee has particular talents the trainee might not yet
recognize, mentors are encouraged to help develop and direct those talents.
Mentors work with BALI students with the goal of helping them to become
pro-active, professional civic, corporate and public interest leaders. We
welcome new mentors. Anyone interested in becoming a mentor or volunteer
judge for our program can contact our office at 212-650-3071 and speak with
our program coordinator, or e-mail
